בנה השישי של לאה, שנחלתו הייתה על חוף הים, ״זבולֻן לחוף ימים ישכֹּן״, איש מסחר ואוניות. חכמים מספרים שזבולון ויששכר כרתו ברית: זבולון יוצא לסחור בים ומפרנס, ויששכר יושב ולומד תורה, והשכר מתחלק בין שניהם בשווה. משום כך הקדים משה בברכתו את זבולון ליששכר, שכן בלי התומך המפרנס אין הלומד יכול ללמוד, וזו הייתה שותפות התורה הראשונה בישראל.

The sages tell that Zevulun and Yissachar forged a pact: Zevulun would go out to trade upon the sea and provide, while Yissachar would sit and study Torah, and the reward would be shared equally between them. For this reason Moshe placed Zevulun before Yissachar in his blessing, for without the provider the scholar cannot learn, and this became the first Torah-support partnership in Israel.
