בנה החמישי של לאה, שיעקב בירכו ״יששכר חמֹר גָּרֶם״, נושא בעול התורה כחמור הנושא משא. שבטו נודע כשבט של לומדי תורה ויודעי העתים, כמו שנאמר בדברי הימים ״ומבני יששכר יודעי בינה לעתים לדעת מה יעשה ישראל״. מבניו יצאו רבים מן הסנהדרין, והם היו האחראים על עיבור השנה וקידוש החודשים, לב הזמן של האומה.
