Avraham's firstborn, born to Hagar the Egyptian when Avraham was eighty six, of whom an angel foretold he would be a "wild man," free and untamed. Sent away from Avraham's house in his youth, tradition teaches that he repented in old age: at Avraham's burial Yishmael stepped back and let Yitzchak lead, a quiet sign that he had come to honor his younger brother. From his line came twelve chieftains who spread across the deserts of Arabia.
