The father of Abraham, remembered in the tradition as a maker and seller of idols: "Your fathers dwelt beyond the River... and they served other gods" (Joshua 24:2). The midrash tells how he left his shop in the hands of the young Abram, who smashed the statues and set the stick in the hand of the largest, so that his father might see for himself how empty the idols were (Bereishit Rabbah 38:13). Terach set out with Abram from Ur of the Chaldeans toward Canaan, but he settled in Charan and died there at two hundred and five (Genesis 11:31-32).
