The third son born to Adam and Chava, after Hevel was killed and Kayin exiled, named Shet because "God has granted me other offspring." Through him runs the unbroken line of generations that leads to Noach and ultimately to Abraham, the chain of righteous men that would survive the Flood. Scripture stresses that he was born "in Adam's likeness," as though the very image of the first man was handed forward through him.
