שת

Seth is the son who gave humanity a new beginning after the breaking. After Cain killed Abel, a third son was born to Adam and Eve, and his name was Seth, 'for God has granted me another offspring in place of Abel' (Genesis 4:25). Out of the mourning for the murdered son, a new line of continuity arose, and from it all of humanity descends to this day.

The Torah stresses that it is precisely through Seth that the line continues to Noah and to Abraham, while the line of Cain was wiped out in the flood. Seth is not the hero of a dramatic tale; he is the quiet point of beginning: the son through whom providence chose to continue the world, after the first generation had nearly broken.

The Sages relate that Seth was born in the likeness of his father Adam, 'in his likeness, after his image,' as if to say that in him was preserved the original image of God that Adam had nearly lost. He is the conduit that guarded the good of the first Creation and passed it onward, beyond the first sin and the first murder.

What do we learn from him? That after every breaking one can begin anew, and that continuity is itself a comfort. Seth teaches that providence guards a thread of good even when a generation breaks, and that out of the heaviest mourning, for a murdered son, a new line can grow that will carry all of humanity to its future.
