King Saul

~Year 2882 from Creation · 879 BCE · The Monarchy and the First Temple

King Saul is the first king, taller than all the people from his shoulders up, and the one whose story is the tragedy of a humility that became a stumbling block. He was anointed against his will, hiding among the baggage on the day of his coronation, 'behold, he is hidden among the baggage' (I Samuel 10:22), a king so modest he nearly fled the crown.

But that very gentleness turned to weakness at the moments of decision. In the war with Amalek he had pity on Agag and on the best of the flock, and did not fulfill the command in full, 'why did you not heed the voice of God' (I Samuel 15). The Sages teach that 'one who becomes merciful to the cruel will in the end become cruel to the merciful,' and misplaced mercy cost him the kingship.

And here is the honesty of Scripture: Saul pursued David in jealousy, yet also confessed 'I have sinned' and wept, and in the end fell in battle at Gilboa with his sons, giving his life rather than surrendering to the Philistines. He was not wicked but a king who broke under a burden greater than himself, and David lamented him: 'how the mighty have fallen.'

What do we learn from him? That even a good trait, when out of place, becomes a stumbling block, and that humility must know when to act with strength. Saul teaches painfully that a leader is measured not by good intentions alone but by the willingness to do the hard thing when the hour demands, and that even a great fall does not erase the valor of a final self-sacrifice.
