בכורו של יעקב מלאה, שאמו קראה שמו על שראה ה׳ בעניה. כשביקשו האחים להרוג את יוסף, ראובן הוא שהצילו: ״אל תשפכו דם, השליכו אֹתו אל הבור״, בכוונה לשוב ולהעלותו אל אביו. אף שאיבד את בכורתו על מעשה נחפז, היה ראשון מבני ישראל שפתח בתשובה, ולכן זכה שערי מקלט ראשונות ייכונו בנחלתו בעבר הירדן.
Yaakov's firstborn by Leah, named by his mother because "God had seen her affliction." When the brothers plotted to kill Yosef, it was Reuven who saved him, pleading "shed no blood, cast him into the pit," intending to return and lift him back to their father. Though he forfeited his birthright over an impulsive act, he was the first of Israel to open the door of repentance, and so the first cities of refuge would later be established in his territory across the Jordan.
