רבינא

Ravina is the partner of Rav Ashi in the sealing of the Talmud, and the one of whom it is said 'Rav Ashi and Ravina are the end of instruction' (Bava Metzia 86a). In the last generation of the Amoraim, as the cloud of persecutions and scattering drew near, Ravina completed the great work of editing, and closed the book that would carry the people through all the exiles.

Tradition distinguishes between two sages named Ravina, and the later Ravina is the one who sealed it. The meaning of 'the end of instruction' is not that Torah ended, but that the foundation was fixed: from here on one learns from the Talmud and rules from it, and the sages after him, the Savoraim, explain and resolve but do not dispute the rulings themselves.

In Ravina's quiet work lies a lesson about completion: knowing when to seal. Had the editing continued without limit, the people would have had no stable book to hold onto in exile. Ravina teaches that there is wisdom also in closing, in fixing the moment when one says 'this far' and hands the finished vessel to the generations.

What do we learn from him? That completing a great enterprise is as important as beginning it, and that there is valor in knowing how to seal. Ravina teaches that transmission to the generations requires a finished and stable vessel, and that one who closes the book in time does a kindness to all who will open it thousands of years later.
