Rav Ashi

~Year 4187 from Creation · 427 CE · The Amoraim and Savoraim

Rav Ashi is the man who gathered the sea of the Talmud into a single vessel. Head of the Sura academy for some sixty years, in a generation when he understood that the Oral tradition, which had grown and expanded for centuries, was liable to scatter, and he rose to edit it: to gather the discussions, opinions and disputes of the generations of Amoraim into an ordered structure, tractate by tractate.

This editing, continued by Ravina, is 'the end of instruction' (Bava Metzia 86a): the sealing point of the Babylonian Talmud, the book that became the backbone of all of Jewish life from then to this day. Every page of Gemara studied in the world is the fruit of the work of Rav Ashi and his generation.

Rav Ashi united in his hand Torah and greatness, like Rebbi in his time. He was wealthy and honored, and the undisputed head of the generation, yet devoted his life to the immense work of gathering, twice in his lifetime reviewing the entire Talmud in his academy. This was not a genius of a moment but perseverance of decades.

What do we learn from him? That there is an hour when the great task is not to innovate but to gather and order, before the wealth scatters. Rav Ashi teaches that a work of editing lasting many years, without the glamour of innovation, can be the deed that holds up a nation for two thousand years, and that quiet perseverance is greater than a passing flash.
