The Rashba

~Year 5070 from Creation · 1310 CE · The Age of the Rishonim

The Rashba, Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet of Barcelona, is the great responder who held Spanish Jewry of his generation almost single-handedly. To him flowed questions from the entire Jewish world, Spain, France, Ashkenaz, the lands of Islam, and thousands of his responsa are preserved, until he was called 'the Rabbi of Spain.' On every hard question, they turned to him.

The Rashba was a disciple of Nachmanides and Rabbeinu Yonah, and inherited from them the combination of plain meaning and secret. His commentaries on the Talmud are studied in every yeshiva, and his book of responsa became a fundamental source of law. But his greatness lay also in leadership: he protected the unity of the communities at a time when disputes over the study of philosophy threatened to split them.

And here is moderation: in the great controversy over the study of external sciences, the Rashba took a middle path. He forbade the young to study philosophy before they were grounded in Torah, but did not disqualify wisdom in itself. He sought to guard the ember without extinguishing the light, and to hold the community united even in dispute.

What do we learn from him? That a leader is measured by his ability to hold an entire people united in a time of dispute, and to answer every questioner with dignity. The Rashba teaches that one can be the halachic anchor of one's generation without losing moderation, and that defending the tradition need not be extreme, but a wisdom that knows when to fence off and when to open.
