״כי בימיו נפלגה הארץ״ (בראשית י, כה): בדורו קמו בני האדם, שפה אחת ודברים אחדים, לבנות עיר ומגדל וראשו בשמים, ועל כן בלל ה׳ את לשונם והפיצם על פני כל הארץ. לפי סדר עולם רבה אירעה ההפלגה בשנת מותו של פלג, ושמו ניתן לו מראש בנבואת אביו. בשלשלת הדורות שבין נח לאברהם הוא החוליה שבה נשבר העולם לעמים וללשונות.
"For in his days the earth was divided" (Genesis 10:25). In Peleg's generation, when all mankind still shared one language and one speech, they gathered to build a city and a tower reaching to the heavens; for this God confused their tongues and scattered them across the whole earth. According to Seder Olam Rabbah the dispersion fell in the very year Peleg died, and his name, meaning "division," had been given to him prophetically at birth. He is the link in the chain from Noach to Abraham at which humanity fractured into nations and languages.
