״הוא היה גיבור ציד לפני ה׳״ (בראשית י, ט), ובלשון חז״ל צייד שצד את דעתם של הבריות והמרידן בקונם. הוא ראש הממלכה הראשונה, בבל שבארץ שנער, ובמסורת הוא המלך שהשליך את אברם לכבשן האש על שסירב לעבוד עבודה זרה, ואברם ניצל (בראשית רבה לח, יג; פסחים קיח ע״א). כנגד גבורתו של הצייד שהעמיד עצמו כא־ל, עמד איש אחד שהכיר בבורא.
"He was a mighty hunter before the Lord" (Genesis 10:9), and the Sages read the phrase darkly: a hunter of men's minds who turned his subjects to rebellion against their Maker. He founded the first kingdom, Bavel in the land of Shinar, and the tradition names him as the tyrant who cast the young Abram into a furnace of fire for refusing to worship idols, from which Abram walked out unharmed (Bereishit Rabbah 38:13; Pesachim 118a). Against the might of the hunter who made himself a god stood a single man who recognized the Creator.
