Son of Metushelach and father of Noach, Lemech saw a ground still under the curse of Adam's sin, worked by human hands with little relief. When his son was born he named him Noach, meaning "rest," saying "this one will comfort us from our work and the toil of our hands," hoping the boy would bring relief. Indeed, the sages relate, Noach was the first to fashion plowing tools, easing the labor of the soil.
