The firstborn of humankind, Kayin worked the soil and brought an offering to God that was not favorably received. Consumed by jealousy of his brother Hevel, he raised his hand against him in the field and became the first murderer in history. God did not put him to death but marked him and sentenced him to wander as "a restless drifter," leaving even a man with blood on his hands a door open to repentance.
