תאומו הבכור של יעקב, ״איש יודע ציד איש שדה״, אדמוני ושעיר, שנולד ליצחק ורבקה לאחר עשרים שנות ציפייה. ביום שבו נפטר אברהם סבו בא עשו עייף מן השדה ומכר את בכורתו ליעקב בנזיד עדשים, ובאותו יום עצמו, מספרים חכמים, עבר חמש עבירות חמורות. הוא הפך לאבי אדום ולסמל האומה היריבה לישראל לאורך הדורות, אף שכיבד את אביו כיבוד גדול.
