The son of Shet, in whose lifetime the world began to slide, when "people began to call in the name of the Lord," a phrase the sages read as the first appearance of idolatry. His generation mistakenly began to honor the sun, stars, and images as God's servants, until they gradually forgot the Creator Himself, an error the great sage Maimonides describes as the root of all idol worship. The sages relate that already in his days the ocean rose and flooded a third of the dry land, a first warning before the Flood that would come.
