Deborah the prophetess is the woman who sat beneath a palm and judged an entire people. In the era of the Judges, when Israel lay under Yavin king of Canaan and Sisera his general, one woman arose, a prophetess and judge, sitting beneath the 'palm of Deborah' between Ramah and Beit El, and all Israel came up to her for judgment (Judges 4).

She did not fight herself but sent Barak son of Avinoam, and when he hesitated to go without her, she went with him, but told him the honor would not be his: 'into the hand of a woman God will deliver Sisera' (Judges 4:9). The victory came through Yael, another woman, and Deborah sang the great victory song, the Song of Deborah.

The Sages call her 'the wife of Lapidot,' and some expound that she would prepare wicks for the sanctuary. Even a prophetess who led a people is rooted in the humble work of preparing light. Her greatness did not contradict her home, but flowed from it.

What do we learn from her? That spiritual leadership is not a matter of power but of a truth people trust. Deborah teaches that a woman can judge an entire people and sing its song, and that true valor knows also how to give the honor to others, to Yael, to Barak, and not to gather it for itself.
