שביעי לדורות מאדם, איש שהתהלך את האלקים בתוך עולם שהלך והתקלקל. הכתוב אינו אומר עליו שמת, אלא ״ואיננו כי לקח אותו אלקים״, לשון חידה שהעסיקה את הפרשנים. רש״י מביא שהיה צדיק אך קל להתפתות, ולכן מיהר ה׳ ולקחו בעודו בצדקתו בטרם ישוב לחטוא. שלוש מאות ששים וחמש שנה בלבד חי, מעט מאוד לדורות ההם, כאילו נקטף בעודו זך.
Seventh in the line from Adam, Chanoch was a man who "walked with God" in a world that was steadily corrupting. Scripture does not say that he died but that "he was no more, for God took him," and Rashi, the classic medieval commentator, explains that he was righteous yet easily swayed, so God took him early, while he was still good, before he could turn to sin. He lived only three hundred and sixty-five years, very short by the standards of that age, as if gathered up while still pure.
