מחייה העברית כשפה מדוברת. עלה ארצה ב-1881 והחליט שבביתו ידברו עברית בלבד, ובנו איתמר היה לילד הראשון בדורות האחרונים שגדל בעברית כשפת אם. חיבר את ״מילון הלשון העברית הישנה והחדשה״, חידש מילים רבות, והיה ממייסדי ועד הלשון, שממנו צמחה האקדמיה ללשון העברית.
The reviver of Hebrew as a spoken language. He came to the Land of Israel in 1881 and resolved that only Hebrew would be spoken in his home; his son Itamar became the first child in many centuries raised with Hebrew as his mother tongue. He compiled the great Dictionary of Ancient and Modern Hebrew, coined many words, and helped found the Hebrew Language Committee, forerunner of today's Academy of the Hebrew Language.
