מנהיג המרד הגדול ברומא, כשני דורות אחרי חורבן הבית השני. רבי עקיבא ראה בו את מלך המשיח ודרש עליו ״דרך כוכב מיעקב״, ולזמן מה עלה בידו לשחרר את יהודה ולטבוע מטבעות ״לחרות ירושלים״. המרד נחנק בחורבן ביתר בתשעה באב, ובעקבותיו באו גזירות השמד ועשרת הרוגי מלכות.

Leader of the great revolt against Rome, about two generations after the Second Temple's destruction. Rabbi Akiva saw him as the King Messiah and applied to him the verse "a star shall step forth out of Jacob"; for a time he freed Judea and struck coins reading "For the freedom of Jerusalem." The revolt was crushed with the fall of Betar on the Ninth of Av, followed by the decrees of persecution and the Ten Martyrs.
