יחד עם התורה שבכתב קיבל משה בסיני את פירושה המלא, התורה שבעל פה: ביאור המצוות, כלליהן ופרטיהן, שנמסרו מרב לתלמיד בשלשלת רצופה. במשך הדורות נכתבה התורה שבעל פה במשנה, בתלמודים ובמדרשים, והיא נשמת חייו של עם ישראל: ״לא כרת הקב״ה ברית עם ישראל אלא בשביל דברים שבעל פה״.
Together with the Written Torah, Moses received at Sinai its full explanation, the Oral Torah: the meaning, rules and details of the commandments, handed from teacher to disciple in an unbroken chain. Over the generations it was set down in the Mishnah, the Talmuds and the Midrashim; it is the living soul of the Jewish people.
