Isaac our father is the stillness between two storms. Between Abraham, who left his place and shattered the world's idols, and Jacob, who wrestled with angels and built twelve tribes, stands Isaac, the father who scarcely moves from his place. He was born by a miracle to an aged mother, bound upon an altar, and never once left the Land.

The Torah tells little of him, and in that lies his secret. Isaac digs wells, the very wells his father had dug and the Philistines had stopped up, and he digs them again and gives them their old names (Genesis 26). This is his work: not to innovate but to sustain, not to break through but to deepen, to make sure the spring Abraham uncovered is not choked shut.

Tradition names his trait 'strength' and 'awe', 'and the Awe of Isaac was with me' (Genesis 31:42). This is not weakness but restraint, a power turned inward. Isaac is the father of reverence, of judgment, of the boundary, and without him Abraham's kindness could not have held its shape in the world.

What do we learn from him? That there is a strength without noise. Not every generation is called to shatter idols or wrestle angels; there are generations whose whole task is to re-dig old wells, to guard what was handed down. Isaac teaches that quiet faithfulness, deepening in place, is itself a pillar the world cannot do without.
