Shem, son of Noah, is the quiet link without which there is no chain. A son of Noah, a survivor of the flood, and the one whom tradition calls simply 'Shem', 'the Name' itself, the head of the line of transmission that would lead to Abraham. He is not the hero of a dramatic tale; he is the conduit that carries the light onward.

The Sages identify Shem with 'Malki-Tzedek, king of Shalem,' who came out to meet Abraham with bread and wine and blessed him (Genesis 14; Nedarim 32b). And more: tradition tells of 'the study house of Shem and Ever,' an academy where the way of God was learned even before the Torah was given, and to which, according to the Sages, Jacob and others went to study.

Here lies his greatness: in the post-flood world, where humanity had again scattered and forgotten, Shem held onto the knowledge. He built no nation and led no masses, but guarded an ember, so that when Abraham came searching for his Creator, there was already someone holding the tradition in his hands.

What do we learn from him? That spiritual continuity is usually preserved not in the spotlight but in quiet rooms of study. There are generations whose entire task is not to let the fire go out. Shem is the merit of the transmitter, the one who passes on what he received, without fame and without recognition, and without him there would have been no Abraham.
