Ever (Eber)

Year 1723 from Creation · 2038 BCE · From the Flood to Abraham

Ever was the grandson of Shem, and the one who, by tradition, gave his name to the 'Ivrim,' to the 'Hebrew.' Abraham is called 'the Hebrew, ha-Ivri' (Genesis 14:13), and the Sages expounded: the whole world was on one side (ever) and he was on the other side (Bereishit Rabbah). The name itself declares a stance, to stand on one side even when the whole world stands on the other.

Ever stands beside his grandfather Shem at the head of 'the study house of Shem and Ever,' a place where the knowledge of God was preserved in a generation of scattering and forgetting. His very name already holds the essence of the Jewish path to come: not to go with the current merely because it is the current.

Tradition also ties him to the generation of the Dispersion: in his days 'the earth was divided' (Genesis 10:25), humanity split into seventy tongues and seventy nations. Ever stood at that crossroads, as the world crumbled into shards of pride, and went on holding one simple knowledge that everyone else had forgotten.

What do we learn from him? That sometimes faithfulness means standing alone. 'Hebrew' is not only an ethnic label; it is a moral declaration: willing to be on the other side. This is exactly the inheritance Abraham received from him, and the inheritance that would accompany his people through all the generations, many times at a heavy price.
