Chava (Eve)

Year 1 from Creation · 3760 BCE · From Creation to the Flood

Eve is 'the mother of all living' (Genesis 3:20), the first woman, and the one through whom both the beauty of life and its brokenness entered the world. She was not formed from the dust like Adam, but from his side, 'not from the head, that she be haughty, nor from the foot, that she be lowly', but level with the heart.

Tradition does not hide her part in the eating from the Tree of Knowledge, where she gave also to her husband and he ate. Yet it also refuses to make her a symbol of evil, as others across the generations have done. Eve is a mother who lost a son at the hand of a son, Abel by Cain, and knew the first grief of any mother in the world, and still bore Seth, through whom the line of humanity continued.

Her name holds a secret: 'Chava' comes from the word for life. Even after the exile from the Garden, even into a world of toil and death, it is the woman who carries life forward. It is no accident that she was named for continuity and not for the sin.

What do we learn from her? That continuity is itself a form of courage. Eve lost Eden and lost a son, and rose and bore life again. All of humanity depends on mothers who chose, again and again, to bring life into a world with no guarantees, for it is exactly in this that life goes on.
